Throughout 2017, Grinding Gear was a busy firm with poe currency expanding Path of Exile. Between The Fall of Oriath and War for the Atlas and together with all the new content added involving, Exiles had a lot to do. In our latest Exiled Tribune, we take a look back with the group at the year that was as well as catch up on development and design blogs across many subjects.

The very first article of notice on the PoE website comes in the form of a handy dandy list of all Grinding Gears' achievements throughout 2017. It's an impressive record, though by no means inclusive of everything which was achieved through the entire year. Most notably, of course, are both huge content expansions that dropped, initially The Fall of Oriath after which War to the Atlas near the end of the year. In between, record numbers of players were actively involved, three challenge leagues started, fresh language support was added and much, much more. Obviously, the most essential issue is that Chris Wilson found an Exalted Orb!

HOW WE DID IT

Upgrades over the past few weeks have really been based on the "how-to" elements of growth. Not only is it fun to read for budding game developers, it's also a lot of fun to read for gamers who simply prefer to know "what is going on under the hood" with game's advancement and why certain design choices are made. Between the technical aspects of Path of Exile and the more artistic ones, the posts provide viewers with insight into their preferred game.

The Undying

First up is a comprehensive and fascinating perspective on the design philosophy behind the Undying. Developers felt the Undying was a "relatively unremarkable monster kind" and wanted to do something more to make it stand out in the match. To this end, the team went through a series of planning stages to make something special to the race throughout the sport.

Our aim with the player's first experience of Act Three was that the very first place would be very quiet, with no monsters to fight outside. Upon venturing into the colour, though, players would be billed by deadly City Stalkers and might have to retreat to the safety of the sunlight. Their experience with the rest of the poe trade currency Act will entail a game of caring very much that regions were shaded, while occasionally being made to step out of the light to travel between buildings. Because of their early encounters with the City Stalkers, they'd fear every minute spent from sunlight, as it is 1 step away from being swarmed by the deadliest monsters in Path of Exile. We intended for City Stalkers to possess enormous life regeneration, preventing players from making reasonable progress past them.
