This position is responsible for assisting in the management and administration of AFSCME’s field and affiliate communications. Manages the field communications staff and coordinates resources for organizing, political, legislative and other priority campaigns, in consultation with key staff from other departments. Coordinates national union resources for these campaigns and assists in executing their tactics, including direct mail, video, literature, web sites, opinion research, paid advertisi.


REQUIREMENTS: 


Education & Experience:



  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in journalism, English, communications or public policy and seven to ten years of experience in labor political or community organizing and campaign communications, including five years of communications and campaign work; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience which provides the needed knowledge, skills and abilities.


Skills



  • Strong relationship building skills and advanced ability to develop strategic campaigns and communications tactics. 

  • Advanced ability to lead projects and coalitions and manage staff.

  • Experience in the production of communications materials, and media and public relations, preferably within a labor union or advocacy organization.

  • Working knowledge of computers and technology, departmental budgeting, and administrative processes and procedures. 

  • Demonstrated understanding of AFSCME related programs and/or labor issues and initiatives that permit effective information distribution.

  • Advanced understanding of AFSCME and union programs and initiatives. 

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and supervise personnel towards position goals and to work within deadlines. 

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills. 

  • Strong presentation and platform skills.

  • Ability to communicate in Spanish is desirable.

  • Valid driver’s license required.

  • Ability to travel to campaigns for extended periods of time.
