In many states, tires are considered to be legally worn out when they have worn down to 1/16" (1.6mm) of their remaining tread depth. If your tread is this worn, you should install the tires ASAP. Other reasons to do the installation sooner, rather than later, would be a visible sidewall bulge (indicating the internal frame of the tire is damaged), or if you have tires that have been on your car 6 years or longer. It may be unsafe to drive on tires with extremely low tread or with a sidewall bulge, so if your tires have those issues, please take your next drive directly to the pro to get your new tires installed.
