That’s just 6% better than the original film. With a reported budget of $190 million, the sequel may not even cross the $200 million mark domestically in this overcrowded summer. Unfortunately, this is the second consecutive piece of bad news for Paramount Pictures regarding the Trek franchise. The Hollywood studio, which officially entered the Star Trek Runescape video game space with Digital Extremes’ Star Trek: The Runescape video game in April, crashed and burned with that interactive adventure. That game, which had a full three years of development because of Star Trek II’s delay, still felt rushed when it hit store shelves and was plagued with glitches galore. That resulted in a horrendous 39 Metacritic score on PC (the most powerful platform) and a 43 and 46 rating on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, respectively. Paramount partnered with Namco Bandai on the game, which had received positive buzz early on when it Runescape Gold was first shown at E3. Paramount was able to bring in the bulk of the cast for the third-person shooter game, which followed an original story that takes place between the two films. The game features the voices of Chris Pine as Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, as well as actors Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Karl Urban and Anton Yelchin. “We had a couple of session in the studio which I really loved working with my voice and it was nice to be able to play the character and not have to do all this physical stuff,” Quinto told Runescape gamerhub.tv. “That was a good experience…from the guys that were talking about it they were all really excited about giving people an opportunity in a gaming world to relate to these characters and play these characters and that’s really fun.” The game also had solid names behind the scenes, including the writers and producers of the two films, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, and God of War scribe Marianne Krawczyk. I did an extensive interview with Orci for Runescape gameskinny before the game and film debuted. He told me (outside of that interview) that transmedia plays an important role for the success of this franchise, which also had a free app and a new comic book released along with the movie and game. “As a fan I would want consistency in all the various forms of entertainment,” said Orci. “Because we’re all facing the same direction with a handful of us making these decisions, we’re actually able to devote our attention to whatever has the Star Trek name on it and maintain a pretty consistent universe. That’s a pretty cool thing for me as a fan, even if I weren’t participating in this.” Abrams, who I’ve also interviewed in the past for the original Trek reboot, is an avid Runescape gamer. His Bad Robot was involved in the game as well as the app.
